The Brief

A cottage front yard made for guests.

This Grand Bend property is a vacation rental, so the front yard has to look good in every listing photo and still feel easy and relaxed when guests arrive. The owners wanted an outdoor space that felt natural to the setting, not overly polished or suburban. We designed a natural flagstone patio and connecting walkway that flow through the yard. Large limestone and granite boulders add character and texture throughout, and help the hardscape sit comfortably within the existing landscape. Landscape lighting finishes the space so guests can enjoy it well after sunset.

The build, in detail.

The patio and walkway were built with carefully selected natural flagstone, laid in an organic pattern that connects the outdoor living areas. Large natural limestone and granite boulders were placed throughout the yard to add height, texture and a natural feel. The flagstone joints were filled with decorative pea stone and secured with a specialized aggregate adhesive. That gives the joints a clean, durable finish that resists weeds and cuts down on upkeep, which matters for a rental between guest stays. Landscape lighting highlights the home’s architectural features, the natural stone and the mature trees, creating a warm atmosphere in the evening.
